Day 161 - More Plastering

Week 34 -Day 161
Lime plastering continues on walls and laths.

Lime plaster being applied to the underside of laths to form the ceiling above
side pews, underneath the gallery on the Jackson Pit side, west side, of the Chapel.
The former Vestry can be seen in its stripped state at the far end. 

The ceiling above the side pews, under the gallery has been re-lathed and is now being lime plastered.

The inner wall on the Jackson Pit side includes a corbeled section of flue for the carrying of fumes and smoke from the central fireplace in the cellar. This flue was inserted from the inside of the building by cutting into the outside wall and creating a flue where none had previously existed. A chimney was then created through the roof, but inside the line of the stone gutter. See earlier photo of this feature from the roof side -

Having completed the laths, the plastering actually started to day.

The final works around the ceiling is the complete the plastering.

Day 119 - Lath and Plaster Ceiling

Week 25 - Day 119
Continuing to apply the first layer of lime plaster to the ceiling lathes.

Day 116 - First Coats of Lime Plaster to Chapel Ceiling

Week 24 - Day 116
The first coats of lime plaster were applied to the lathes of the chapel ceiling today.

Day 64 - Locating the Skylights

Week 14 - Day 64
Another short week this week, having just had the May Bank Holiday.
But, work carries on apace with the position of the skylights being denoted by the gaps in the ceiling laths.

Day 53 - Fixing New laths in Place

Week 11 - Day 53
New laths have started to be put in place to form the new lath and plaster ceiling.
The laths are being held in place with stainless steel wood screws.

Day 32 - Inside the Roof Space

Week 7 - Day 32
With the ceiling removed and the slates off we can look at details in the upper roof space.

Detail just below the chimney on the south wall.
The vertical stone flags line the inner side of the chimney were the flues rise from
a fireplace which is located on the main chapel floor.

The chimney stack for this chimney was blocked in the past.
It served the flue from a kitchen range in the middle cellar dwelling.
